Creating custom wood decor that is both beautiful and functional

I built custom furniture and cabinets for about six years before returning to school. I still spend a lot of time in the woodshop doing hobby work, and I accept a commission now and then.

Rustic Maple Kitchen

The cabinets for this kitchen were constructed entirely out of Rustic Maple. Most of the cabinets were clear finished, but the island cabinets were coated with green milk paint, which was then sanded so the maple coloring could show through. Two base cabinets feature punched tin panels, and some of the upper cabinets include mullioned […]

Arts and Crafts Reproduction Armoire

My client spotted an Arts and Crafts style armoire in the background of a picture in an Architectural Digest magazine, and asked me to make a reproduction. Based on her space and functional requirements and the proportions of the armoire in the image, I designed and built this piece. The quarter-sawn White Oak doors have […]

White Oak Display Pedestal

This White Oak display pedestal was designed and built for an artist to display her work. The pedestal is quite large – over 6′ x 6′ and had to be delivered in pieces with final assembly performed on-site. The sunburst motif is recurring on all four sides and subtly imitates a recurring theme in the […]

Black Oak Hutches and Bar

These matching pieces were built of Red Oak so that the wood grain would show through the finish. The black milk paintwas slightly distressed at wear points to reveal a dark red finish below. The upper sections of the hutches have mullioned glass doors and a rack for stemmed glasses. The small, corner bar includes a […]

White Oak Built-In Set

This set of built-ins was designed to match other woodwork in the house. The hutch is completely recessed in the wall, with just the trim and face-frame inside the room. The bottom doors in the hutch are a small liquor cabinet secured by a hidden locking mechanism. The hutch is flanked by two matching corner […]

Fireplace Mantels

These mantels were designed to the customers’ specifications. The Cherry mantel is nearly eight feet long and draws inspiration from the Shaker and Craftsman styles. The Red Oak corner-mantel employs a simple design, letting the strong Oak grain speak for itself. return to Woodworking Portfolio

Rustic Bathroom Cabinets

The furnishings of this bathroom were intended to evoke nature. The cabinets are selected brown Rustic Maple. The countertop is a highly-polished slab of locally-sourced fir with a ‘live’ edge. return to Woodworking Portfolio

Plantation Shutter Vanity

For this project, the client wanted something unique, with an organic, outdoorsy feel. That’s a challenging requirement for a cabinet, but after exchanging a number of ideas, we settled on shutters for doors. The hand-selected maple was gently pickled for a slightly weathered look, and the louver tilt rod serves as a door pull. return […]

Chocolate Dry Bar

This small dry bar was carefully designed to make the best use of a small room between the client’s kitchen and back porch. Constructed of hard maple and stained a deep chocolate color, the bar includes a stemware rack, apothecary drawers, a compartment for a wine refrigerator, and a cleverly concealed trash bin. return to […]

Office Furnishings

Walnut Library

This library and work area takes up one end of the front room in the client’s house. The client wanted adjustable shelves, but didn’t want to see hardware or shelf-pin holes, so the shelves sit on a handmade ladder system, and the fluted trim and rosettes are also handmade. Behind the cabinet doors are a […]

Beaded and Glazed Maple Kitchen

This kitchen was a complete reface, including end panels and counter edges. The door panels were constructed of select Hard Maple, hand beaded and glazed. return to Woodworking Portfolio

Extra-Custom Hickory Kitchen

This kitchen remodel came with a number of special requirements. It includes magnet doors, a pocket to display important documents, an erasable note-board, and more. The breadboard ends include pinned mortise-and-tenon joinery, one of the small base cabinets conceals a laundry chute, and every board was hand-selected for color. return to Woodworking Portfolio
